If the 2014 Tumblr girl were a color, she would be black; if she were a place, she would be Brooklyn, New York; if she were a season, she would be fall; and if she were a character, she would be Effy from Skins. This was the era of all things cool, or at least we thought it was. Girls wore smudged eyeliner, uncomfortable doc martens, ripped tights, and band shirts. In between classes, we would listen to artists such as Lana Del Rey, The 1975, and the Arctic Monkeys. It was when posting your own depressing poetry online wasn't a cry for help. 2014 was full of teenage angst and romanticizing our sadness.

While the Tumblr girl fell off due to new trends such as the vsco girl or clean girl aesthetic, she is back and better than ever. Whether it was TikTok that brought this trend back or the fact that The 1975 and the Arctic Monkeys both released new albums this year, we can all agree we're feeling a bit nostalgic. The Tumblr girl can probably never be fully replicated because American Apparel is just not what it used to be, plus I think most of us threw away our studded denim shorts. Although 2014 seems like it was a century ago, it wasn't too long ago compared to other trends and eras that have made a comeback, such as the 80s and 90s.
This time around, we include the indie sleaze into the mix. Indie sleaze came before the Tumblr girl. A lot of indie sleaze had to do with nightlife during the time of myspace. There were digital cameras everywhere which is something we have seen recently on social media. We made a sudden move from film photos everywhere to digital photos. Indie sleaze is this idea of looking effortless but messy. These girls were party animals full of angst and rebellion. Think Taylor Momsen, Alexa Chung, and the Olsen twins. It's when dirty hair and last night's makeup were a look. So whether you want to call it the Tumblr girl aesthetic or indie sleaze, she is back and here to stay. So let's all rise for the resurrection of the 2014 Tumblr girl.
